PRODUCT SPECIFICATION — Garrett Gas Train Kit (H2S/CO2)
Model: IM-GGT-RHS2 Compliance / target standard: API RP 13B-1 Sec. 12
Garrett Gas Train Kit (H2S/CO2)
Figure 8. Reference photograph of the Garrett Gas Train Kit (H2S/CO2), with the three-chamber gas train, dual regulator, flowmeters, detector tubes and carrying case. Components are listed on page 2
Intended applications
• Quantitative measurement of soluble sulfides in water-based mud filtrate when drilling sour formations.
• Measuring total soluble carbonates (CO2, carbonate, bicarbonate) for contamination diagnosis.
• Monitoring sulfide-scavenger treatments such as zinc-based products.
• Qualitative H2S check using lead-acetate paper.
FEATURES
• Clear acrylic block (about 2.5 x 4 x 6 in) with three interconnected chambers.
• Regulator and carrier-gas cartridges for portable operation.
• Hand pump / gas bag and detector tubes for H2S and CO2.
• Septum injection port for syringe sampling.
• Complete carrying case with spare seals and reagents.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
| Method | Acidification, gas stripping and detector-tube measurement |
| Chambers | 3 interconnected chambers in an acrylic block |
| Analytes | Soluble sulfides (H2S, HS-, S2-); total soluble carbonates |
| Sample | Solids-free filtrate, injected by syringe through the septum |
| Reagents | Sulfuric acid (about 5 N), deionised water, octanol defoamer |
| Detectors | H2S and CO2 detector tubes; lead-acetate paper (qualitative) |
| Carrier Gas | Gas cartridges via low-pressure regulator |
Main components (see Figure 8)
| No. | Component |
| 1 | Septum and syringe |
| 2 | Lid and thumb screws |
| 3 | Chamber 1: sample and acid |
| 4 | Chamber 2: gas transfer |
| 5 | Regulator and carrier-gas cartridge |
| 6 | Chamber 3 with detector tube |
Principle of operation
Basic operating procedure
1. Clean and dry the train; add deionised water and a few drops of defoamer to chamber 1.
2. Fit the correct detector tube (H2S or CO2) and the required paper or fill in the other chambers as described by
the standard.
3. Close the lid and connect the carrier-gas regulator; flush the train briefly.
4. Inject the measured filtrate volume through the septum, then inject sulfuric acid.
5. Start the gas flow and draw gas through the detector tube for the specified time.
6. Read the stain length, calculate the concentration from the tube factor and sample volume, then flush and clean
the train.
Calibration and maintenance
• Replace O-rings and septa when cracked or leaking.
• Clean chambers with mild detergent and rinse thoroughly; never use solvents that attack acrylic.
• Check detector-tube expiry dates and store tubes as recommended.
• Test the train for leaks before each series of tests.
Safety precautions
• H2S is toxic and flammable: work in a well-ventilated area and follow site H2S procedures.
• Sulfuric acid is corrosive: wear gloves, goggles and protective clothing.
• Dispose of spent detector tubes and acid solutions in accordance with local rules.
